He is one of the most famous Brazilian architects. His work, which is closely related to the International Style movement, has a major place in the history of modern architecture. He is best known for the construction of Brasilia in Brazil with the urban planner Lucio Costa, which was inaugurated in 1960. Exiled to Europe in the mid-1960s, he built the headquarters of the French Communist Party, the former headquarters of the newspaper L'Humanité, the Bourse du Travail in Bobigny and the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre.

He received the Pritzker Prize in 1988 and was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour on 12 December 2007, three days before his 100th birthday.
